An old saying “clothing makes the man” was true in the Middle Ages. From the types of cloth used to the trim to the decorations were important to show both wealth and power.
When we think of costuming today, we think of going to the local fabric store, buying material and making the clothes. But in Medieval Times, clothing was a process from those who raised the sheep to the seamstresses and tailors who sewed the clothing. Today, while we may balk at a dress that costs $100, a fine dress, in the Middle Ages could easily cost a year’s wages for many.
